Fordham Foundry Mentor Pledge

As a mentor at the Fordham Foundry, I commit to the following principles

Be Socratic: I will guide with questions to stimulate critical thinking.

Expect nothing in return: My mentorship is selfless, with no expectation of personal gain.

Be Authentic. Practice What You Preach: I will lead by example, embodying the values I impart.

Be Direct. Tell the Truth, However Hard: I will provide honest and straightforward feedback, even when it's tough. Listen: I will actively listen to my mentees' thoughts and concerns.

The Best Mentor Relationships Eventually Become Two-Way: I understand that learning is a two-way street, and I'll be open to gaining insights from mentees.

Be Responsive: I will be readily available to support and guide when needed.

Clearly Separate Opinion From Fact: I will distinguish between personal opinions and factual advice.

Hold Information In Confidence: I will maintain confidentiality and trust with sensitive information.

Commit to Mentor, or Do Not. Either Is Fine: I will make clear commitments to mentorship or decline when necessary.

Know What You Don’t Know. Say “I Don’t Know” when you don’t know: I'll acknowledge my limitations and admit when I lack knowledge.

Guide, Don’t Control: I will offer guidance but respect the autonomy of mentees.

Accept and Communicate With Other Mentors That Get Involved: I'll collaborate with fellow mentors for the benefit of our mentees.

Be Optimistic: I will bring a positive outlook to inspire entrepreneurial spirits.

Provide Specific Actionable Advice: My advice will be practical and actionable.

Be Challenging/Robust but Never Destructive: I will challenge ideas for growth but never undermine motivation or confidence.

Have Empathy. Remember That Startups Are Hard: I will be empathetic, recognize the challenges startups face, and offer support with understanding.

In line with these principles, I pledge to foster an environment where entrepreneurship can thrive and mentees can grow and succeed.

This pledge is largely influenced by Brad Feld’s Techstars manifesto.
